How credit improvement works

We’ve spent almost two decades helping people improve their credit score by disputing inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading information on their report and building positive history. Here’s what we do, why it matters, and what your rights are under the law.

Your credit file tells a story... but is it true?

When you apply for a personal or business loan, mortgage or rental home, the first thing the lender or landlord does is check your credit file. They see your scores and your negative items, and piece together a story about you.

But what happens when the story isn’t true? In a 2024 Consumer Reports study, 44% of participants who checked their credit reports found at least one error.

At The Credit Pros, it’s our job to help you find those errors and dispute them, so your credit doesn’t stand in the way of the life you want to live.

Step 1: See your file like a lender does

The first step is to pull your full credit file. We show you what lenders and landlords see when they review your file: all the items that could be dragging your score down and show you what you can do about them.

This is a soft pull, so it won’t affect your credit score.

Step 2: Change the story

There are two ways to change what your credit report says about you: adding what should be there (positive history) and taking off what shouldn't (negative items). At The Credit Pros, we help you do both.

Building positives

We help you build a positive payment history and strengthen your credit mix by:

  • Reporting your on-time Credit Pros payments to the bureaus
  • Giving you timely alerts and personalized advice to keep your credit score on track

Removing negatives

You have a federal right to dispute anything in your credit file you believe is inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading. If the bureau can't verify it, it has to come off. We help you find these errors and dispute them in a compliant way.

  1. You select the items you believe are inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading and you’d like us to dispute
  2. We send attorney-vetted disputes to each bureau reporting the item
  3. We follow up until the bureau either removes the item or verifies that it should be on there

Credit monitoring and education

While we’re working on your credit, we help you build healthy habits and show you how your everyday choices affect your credit:

  • We actively monitor your credit file, scan the dark web for your personal information, and notify you if anything changes or looks off.
  • We pinpoint the areas of your credit profile where you could use some improvement and show you exactly what to do about it.

Giselle’s journey with The Credit Pros

  1. Starting score: 444.

    Life is chaos.

  2. The setback.

Health reasons caused a job loss and isolation from her family. Her finances slid.

  3. Stuck.

Back at work, but the money goes straight out. No time or money left for the small moments with her kids.

  4. The turning point.

"If I don't take control of my finances, who's going to do it for me?"

    Giselle
  5. The search.

Giselle is a self-described skeptic who doesn't believe in shortcuts. She calls 10–12 credit repair companies. Most promise the world, and she doesn’t believe them.

  6. The trigger.

She receives a lawsuit notice over a small debt, with a court date already set.

  7. Finding The Credit Pros.

She finds The Credit Pros through search. When she calls, the team tells her honestly they can't make the lawsuit go away, but they'll help her understand her options.

"They sold me honesty, not illusions."

    Giselle

She signs up on the spot.

  8. Early doubts.

She worries she'll be just a number. Instead, someone answers every time she calls, even for the smallest questions. One team member becomes her "angel of light."

  9. Doing the work.

She forwards every collector letter, gets delivery confirmations within days, and sees each one folded into the next round of disputes.

  10. Learning.

She learns how to pay down her debts in an intentional way to regain control of her finances.

  11. Rebuilding confidence.

"It's like losing weight. It's not about the scale."

    Giselle

She's proving to herself she can do it.

  12. 6+ months in.

She trusts the process enough to stop checking her score.

"The best money I’ve ever spent… a financial university."

    Giselle
  13. Current score: 659.

Giselle is a real client of The Credit Pros. Scores shown are VantageScores from TransUnion, pulled March 26, 2026 and October 12, 2026. Her results reflect her own debt paydown along with The Credit Pros’ services. Individual results vary. Giselle received three free months of service for sharing her personal journey.

Step 3: Get ready for what’s next

When you're working on your credit, it’s not always clear what to do next. The more we work together, the better we understand your goals, so we can help you figure out the right moves. And when it helps, we can connect you with trusted partners who offer loan options, credit building tools, and ways to make and save money.

Doing it yourself

Can’t I dispute things myself?

You absolutely can. You have a legal right to dispute inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading information, and it is possible to do it yourself.

The dispute process isn’t always straightforward, however, especially when the first attempt doesn’t end in an item being deleted from your report. Our Credit Specialists know the process and stay on top of your disputes every step of the way. If a bureau verifies something you believe is inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading, or you're not sure what your next move should be, they know how to handle it.

Can I build credit myself?

Yes! There are many things that you can do to build your credit: paying accounts on time is the most important thing. If you need help setting up new accounts that report positive payments without hard inquiries, a company like The Credit Pros can help.

Timing and your score

How long does this take?

Disputes run about 30 days each. For someone with no credit history, building can take about six months before some scoring models can generate a score. If you have a date you're working toward, tell us and we'll be honest about what's realistic.

Will this hurt my score?

The free review is a soft pull and won't affect it. Disputing itself doesn't count against your score either.

Can you guarantee my score will go up?

No, and nobody can honestly promise that. Be wary of anyone who makes this claim.

What if an item is accurate?

It stays. Accurate, current information that the bureau can verify doesn't come off because someone asked. Most negative items fall off on their own about seven years after you first fell behind, and a Chapter 7 bankruptcy can stay ten.

If something comes off my report, does the company that turned me down find out?

Not unless you ask. If an item is removed, you can ask the credit bureau to notify anyone who pulled your report in the last six months, or two years if the pull was for a job. It won't reopen an application that was already declined, but it does correct the record with the companies that saw the bad information.

Payments and cancelling

Can I cancel?

Yes, you can cancel at any time.

What does the first payment cover?

Your first work fee covers your Initial Credit Action Plan. Depending on the plan you choose, it may include:

  • Credit monitoring with a monthly TransUnion report and score
  • A line-by-line review of your credit report to spot anything that may be inaccurate, outdated, unverifiable or misleading
  • A written action plan for each account and steps to build positive credit
  • Requests to correct errors in your personal details, like old addresses or misspelled names
  • A review of your budget and financial goals
  • Adding your number to the Do Not Call list and opting you out of junk mail
  • Access to credit education and tools in your client portal

Working with your Credit Specialist

Do I have to talk to someone?

No. You can contact your Credit Specialist by phone, email or text, and how much you communicate with them is up to you. We're here for you in any way you need us.

Can I book time with my Credit Specialist whenever I want?

Yes! You can speak with your Credit Specialist anytime, for as long as you're with us. Book a call whenever you want to go through your file, ask questions, or talk about something that's changed.

Building credit

Does this work if I have no credit at all?

Yes, we can help you build credit from scratch. Learn more about starting out with little or no credit.

What if there’s nothing wrong on my report?

If there aren’t any negatives on your report, but your score isn’t where you need it to be yet, we can help you build your positive history.

See your credit like a lender would

We’ll show you exactly what’s on your file and what lenders look for when evaluating borrowers.

This is a soft credit pull, so it won’t impact your score.
